New Rochelle, New York. He studied at Hommocks School,before being spotted by a talent scout in his early teens. Matt's looks and charisma helped him land his first movie, Over the Edge (1979), aged just fifteen.
Three years later Matt appeared in the movie Tex (1982), and then in the classic teenage film The Outsiders (1983) alongside Tom Cruise, Rob Lowe and Patrick Swayze. A year later he appeared in another iconic film Rumble Fish, and suddenly Matt was the hottest young actor in Hollywood.
Ever since then, Matt has worked constantly at the forefront of Hollywood with movies such as The Flamingo Kid (1984), Drugstore Cowboy (1989), To Die For (1995) and One Night at McCool's (2001).
In 2004 he gave the performance of his career in the award winning movie Crash. Matt received an Academy Award Nomination for his role but lost out to George Clooney in the battle for Best Supporting Actor.
