His first stage appearance came in The Woman In Black, shortly followed by a role in Month In The Country. He then joined the Royal Shakespeare Company and performed in plays such as Son Of Man, Les Enfants Du Paradis, Troilus and Cressida, and The Herbal Bed.
His first screen role was in the television drama The Vacillations of Poppy Carew in 1995. However, his big break came in 1998 when he was cast as Will Shakespeare in the movie Shakespeare in Love. The film was a tremendous success, winning the Best Picture Oscar at the Academy Awards.

Since then Joseph has appeared in numerous movies and television productions, including Enemy at the Gates (2001), Killing Me Softly (2002) and the The Merchant of Venice (2004).
